Turn down

This section looks at ways you can reduce carbon emissions simply by turning down your household appliances. You might be surprised how big an impact such a seemingly small action will have - and the best bit is, you probably won't even notice the difference!

Reduce the temperature of your home by just 1°C and save up to 300 kg CO2 per household and year.
Programme the thermostat of your home to set the temperature low at night or when you’re out of the house and save about 440 kg CO2 per household and year.
Replace your old single-glazed windows with double-glazed ones and save up to 350 kg CO2 per household and year.
Make sure that your home is well insulated and save over 630 kg CO2 per household and year.
Increase the performance of your fridge by placing it in a cool environment and save up to 150 kg CO2 per year.
When replacing your old fridgefreezer buy one with European Grade A+ (with automatic defrost cycles) and save about 210 kg CO2 per year. When buying new home appliances try to choose products with the highest possible European Grade-level.
Let hot food cool down to room temperature before putting it in the fridge and save about 6 kg CO2 per year.
